Sleeping Positions

Can Your Sleep Position Improve Your Health?

Anthropologists will tell you that the way we sleep is a cultural thing. From hammocks in the Amazon to tatami mats in Japanese homes, sleep positions and beds vary from country to country. Sleep research has shown that perhaps our American way of sleeping on a flat surface may not always be the best for our health. In fact, studies have shown that sleeping with the head raised is beneficial for sleep apnea and a host of other health problems.

According to medical anthropologist Sydney Ross Singer, the way we have learned to sleep in our culture “may be one of the most important causes of various diseases plaguing our society.” Of all the aspects of our sleep customs, our sleep position is the most important. Singer postulates that sleeping flat creates brain pressure and fluid accumulation causing a lack of oxygen and sugar in the brain.

The Reverie Sleep Zodiac

  • The Thinker

Position and Personality

“Thinkers” sleep on the side in a fetal or curled up position – either with both arms on top of the pillow or one arm beneath the pillow. You always have at least one hand resting on the chin. (Hence the name!) “Thinkers,” you are often described as tough on the outside, sensitive on the inside. You are very kind but can be vulnerable to emotional hurts. Flipping between bold adventure and confined structure, open generosity and emotional shyness, you are never boring and you make a great and loyal friend.

Our Sleep System Suggestions

Because you are a side sleeper, you need softer support at the hip and shoulder areas. This will eliminate pressure points while still maintaining proper spinal alignment. We recommend a Soft mattress configuration for “Thinkers” who are lighter weight and a Medium mattress configuration for those who are heavier. An adjustable bed foundation with massage is perfect for relaxing into a deep, blissful sleep.
  • The Stargazer

Position and Personality

“Stargazers,” you sleep on your back with legs slightly apart and arms up around the pillow near your head. “Stargazers,” you attract others because of your “happy-go-lucky” attitude. You love freedom, comfort, beauty and all that life has to offer. You may tend to be a little hedonistic and sometimes have expectations that are too high.

Our Sleep System Suggestions

“Stargazers,” because you are concerned about better back support, you tend to prefer a firmer mattress. Reverie’s configurations provide Medium and Firm extra lumbar support for proper spinal alignment, and the soft comfort layer not only feels good but also aids in circulation. Slightly softer supports cradle the shoulder and neck area. As a back sleeper, the Massage and Zero Gravity features of our adjustable foundations will provide additional lumbar support and enhance circulation.
  • The Starfish

Position and Personality

“Starfish,” you sleep on your back with legs spread apart and arms away from your sides. You are an excellent listener and make a great friend and confidant. You are kind and helpful to others. You are usually content to stay in the background, but every so often, you enjoy being in the spotlight yourself.

Our Sleep System Suggestions

“Starfish,” you want support for your back, and our Reverie Medium or Firm configurations will give you extra lumbar support to ensure proper spinal alignment. The soft comfort layer will cushion your body and aid in circulation as you sleep. Slightly softer supports in the shoulder and head areas create a cradling effect. “Starfish” who are lighter weight or like softer mattresses should select the medium, while heavier “Starfish” might prefer firm. If you have back pain, you will love the benefits of the Zero Gravity position of our adjustable power bases because it relieves the stress on your back after a hard day’s work. You might even end up sleeping in Zero Gravity because it is so comfortable.
  • The Free Faller

Position and Personality

As a Free faller, as if having fallen from the sky, you sleep on your front, with hands around the pillow and head turned to the side. Free fallers are lovers of freedom. You can be very intense, wearing your heart on your sleeve, and every so often showing your wild and gregarious side (and sometimes your temper). You try hard to keep some structure in your life in order to control the intensity of your inner personality and energy.

Our Sleep System Suggestions

For Free Fallers a bed that is too firm can put pressure on your lower back and knees. You need extra soft support in both of those areas to keep you in proper spinal alignment. Either the Soft or Medium mattress (depending on your firmness preference) will give you the support and comfort you need. After you have “landed” on your bed, you will definitely enjoy the soothing comfort of the massage feature on your adjustable foundation.
  • The Soldier

Position and Personality

“Soldiers” sleeps flat on the backs, face to the ceiling or slightly turned, arms down at the side or slightly out, and legs straight. “Soldiers:” you might have strong emotions on the inside, but appear to be quiet and reserved to the world. You are self-controlled, cautious and dependable. You are protective of the people who are close to you and value the bonds you have with them. You tend to be organized (but not necessarily super-neat), and you are an intelligent thinker, even though others might not recognize that about you.

Our Sleep System Suggestions

“Soldiers:” because you sleep on your back, you need both softness and firmness. Our Medium and Firm configurations have extra lumbar support for correct alignment and a soft comfort layer for proper circulation while you sleep. “Soldiers” who are lighter weight will do well with the Medium, while heavier “Soldiers” should consider the Firm latex mattress. As a back sleeper, you will enjoy the Zero Gravity and Massage features of our Adjustable Foundations.
  • The Yearner

Position and Personality

You sleep with your head slightly off the center of the pillow, arms outstretched along it, your back straight and legs slightly bent. “Yearners,” your complex sleeping position represents someone who is open and friendly on the outside, but slightly mistrusting of others on the inside. You might be outwardly kind but inwardly cynical. You make very careful decisions and may even seem to be stubborn. But you make a loyal and good friend when you are truly committed to someone.

Our Sleep System Suggestions

“Yearners:” the extension of your arms puts your head and neck in an awkward position, and you will need soft support to eliminate pressure points on your shoulder and hip. The softness will allow your hip and shoulder to sink into the mattress just enough for proper spinal alignment. We recommend a Soft Mattress for lighter weight “Yearners” who like a soft bed. For heavier “Yearners”, a Medium mattress is perfect. “Yearners,” you will love the extensive range of positions in the 5D Deluxe adjustable foundation: Massage and Zero Gravity create your perfect pre-sleep, relaxing state.
  • The Log

Position and Personality

“Logs,” you sleep on your side with back, legs and arms straight, hands at your sides and the side of your face resting on the pillow. “Logs,” you are carefree, easy-going and very sociable. You are friendly, popular and enjoy a busy social life. Your statue-like sleeping position shows that “Logs” have very relaxed inner selves. You trust that you will sleep well, just as you trust other people.

Our Sleep System Suggestions

“Log Sleeper,” because you are a side sleeper with your arms straight at your sides, you need a softer mattress to relieve hip and shoulder pressure points while still maintaining proper alignment. For lighter weight “Logs,” we recommend a Soft mattress and for heavier “Logs,” a Medium is perfect. Logs will love using the adjustable bed foundation’s Zero Gravity feature to relax your tired muscles and help you transition to a state of blissful sleep.
