Sleep Tip of The Month: Block the Blue Light!

Visible light is actually a spectrum of colors, one of which is the color blue. Scientists have learned that blue light suppresses the body’s natural production of melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that the body produces to help regulate its natural sleep/wake cycle, and the production of melatonin helps you fall asleep and initiate the sleep cycles (Slow Wave, REM, etc.) that you need.

Unfortunately, many modern electronics (think laptop screens, televisions, etc.) emit huge amounts of blue light. So even though it is dark outside, the emission of this blue light through electronics around the house can suppress production of melatonin in your body and disrupt your natural sleep cycle.

Fortunately, there are some cheap and easy ways to minimize blue light from appliances and electronics from around the house from harming your sleep.

  1. Minimize the use of any electronics with a color screen, including iPads, iPods, Laptops, and Televisions within 2 hours of bed time.
  2. Purchase bulbs that block blue light, e.g. LowBlueLights.com.
  3. Get a pair of blue light blocking glasses (search on Google or Amazon and you’ll find several options for under 10 dollars) and try to start wearing them a few hours before bed time if you can.
