New research on how hunger is related to sleep has focused on two metabolic hormones: leptin and ghrelin. Leptin tells the body it's full, and Ghrelin signals hunger. We need to keep the two hormones balanced to keep from waking up hungry in the night. To help balance these hormones, a light bedtime snack may help. But what is a good choice for a bedtime snack?

Piece of cheese or peanut butter with cracker

A little piece of cheese or peanut butter with a cracker (the carbs increase sleep-inducing tryptophan), a small bowl of cereal with milk, a cookie or muffin are fine. But please skip the chocolate, soda or other caffeinated food.
